Málaga in short

Málaga spent years being treated as the airport you pass through on the way to the Costa del Sol. That is over. The old town has been pedestrianised, the port rebuilt, and there are now more museums per street than almost anywhere in Andalusia.

It is also the cheapest of the big southern cities to fly into, which makes it a sensible place to start or end a Spain trip.

Why visit Málaga?

Things to do

  1. Alcazaba and Gibralfaro

A Moorish fortress climbing the hill above the centre, with the best view in the city at the top.

  2. Mercado Atarazanas

A nineteenth-century iron market with a stained-glass window and a row of cheap seafood counters.

  3. Soho street art

The district between the centre and the port is covered in large-scale murals, all free to see.

  4. Day trip to Ronda

Under two hours by train or bus, and the gorge is worth every minute of the journey.
