Alicante in short

Alicante is the relaxed end of the east coast: a working Spanish city with a castle on a limestone crag, a marble promenade along the water and a beach right in the centre.

It is also one of the cheapest places in Spain to fly in or out of, which makes it a practical bookend to an east-coast route that starts in Barcelona.

Why visit Alicante?

Things to do

  1. Santa Bárbara castle

Take the lift up, walk the ramparts, then come down through the old town on foot.

  2. Barrio de la Santa Cruz

Steep lanes of blue-and-white houses and flowerpots, right below the castle.

  3. Explanada de España

A wave-patterned marble promenade under the palms — the evening walk the whole city does.

  4. Tabarca island

A short boat ride to a tiny walled island with clear water and one main street.
